The Amazing Grace Race from Octane kid's ministry in Kalkaska.

Amazing Grace Race

Last week was one of my favorite weeks that I do with the Octane kids. We did an Amazing Grace Race. It is similar to the Amazing Race show, where teams have to complete tasks. At each challenge, they received a food item to put together a Thanksgiving basket. After the baskets are compiled the teams made cards to go with the baskets.  The kids all enjoyed the game, but the best part was knowing that they were doing something How COVID has affected us

Introducing the DINO Squad

DINO Squad Looking for a way to plug in? There is a new squad at KCC. It’s called the DINO squad. DINO stands for Developing Intergenerational Nurturing Opportunities. The DINO Squad is open to anyone, of any age. Our objective is to go out into the community and visit those who aren’t able to get out, feel a little lonely, or could benefit from smiling faces. We will do visits one Monday a month to begin with but visiting times How COVID has affected us

Planting Seeds

Some days I question whether I am making a difference. I wonder if the lessons I am teaching are reaching the kids. It is a hard balance to keep their attention, help them to learn a lesson, and have games and crafts pertaining to the story to help it stick. Often, despite my best efforts, they will walk away remembering the “fun” and not necessarily the lesson. I always think of the parable of the sower from Matthew 13.  “That same How COVID has affected us

Interactive Article

Ok friends! This is an interactive article! You will need a stopwatch or timer of some sort and you will need some time to pray. I’ve done “guided prayers” a few times and they can be very powerful and I love how intentional they are. They are helpful when I’ve set aside an hour of prayer or when I’ve been asked to pray for an hour. (This won’t be an hour although if you would like to extend your times How COVID has affected us

The Fruit of the Spirit

It is the first week of our after-school programs! I am sooo excited! After a shortened year two years ago and last year, it is a relief to be meeting again. I would love your prayers for these kids. They have been through a lot. For some of the younger kids, they haven’t ever had a normal year.  This year we will be learning the Fruit of the Spirit. I am so glad that this is what we will be How COVID has affected us

Reflections of a soon-to-be empty nester

My youngest son’s graduation from college is about two weeks away.  Looking forward to that has given me time to reflect on raising our sons as one is in the workforce and the other is about to enter the workforce.  I was reading a book recently a guy wrote about his 50 years in ministry.  In the book, he identifies ten things he would have done differently and ten things he would have done the same.  Given we are in How COVID has affected us

Kids on Bus

Lord Willing

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to take 16 of our 4th and 5th grade students on an overnight trip to Grand Rapids. Normally we go to Chicago for the  CIY Superstart! Conference. We didn’t get to go last year because of Covid and they cancelled the in person conference this year. Thankfully they did a virtual conference so we were able to still have it with some improvisations.  If anyone is wondering how this pandemic has changed How COVID has affected us

Childlike

Last week was my first full week with kids. I had them Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday. My passion for my job was rekindled and I was reminded why Jesus told us to become more like children. I taught them 3 different lessons from the Bible. They taught me several.  On Sunday, I taught on the unforgiving servant. It was a great reminder about how because Jesus first forgave us, that we too must forgive others. Later on in the week How COVID has affected us
